In July and August 2026, Uwezo Uganda conducted the 2026 National Learning Assessment, integrating measurements of life skills and values for children aged 4–16 years. In past national assessments, we experienced low rates of inclusion for children with disabilities (CWD). This is partly because household-based approaches can miss children who live in boarding special schools or units during fieldwork, and because of other barriers to identification and participation.
To address this gap, we conducted a supplementary, school-based foundational learning assessment of numeracy, reading and problem-solving for CWD. The assessment covered four districts: Yumbe, Ntungamo, Mukono and Luuka. It included a selection of CWD attending special primary schools, special units within regular primary schools, and designated inclusive primary schools. The findings will provide vital evidence on what CWD are learning and the support they receive across different school environments.
We will share the findings on our website once the analysis is complete.
