Dr Mary Goretti Nakabugo is Executive Director of Uwezo Uganda, a
research-driven Civil Society Organisation that generates, curates and
shares regular independent evidence on the status of education in Uganda
and East Africa. She represents the African continent on the UNESCO
Global Education Monitoring Report (GEMR) Advisory Board. She also
chairs the Board of the Regional Education Learning Initiative Africa
(RELI Africa) and is co-Principal Investigator of its flagship program
on Assessment and Action for Life Skills and Values in East Africa
(ALiVE). Her prior work experience has mainly been in research, teaching
and governance in higher education. She was Twaweza Country Lead and
Regional Manager of Uwezo East Africa. She has held academic and
research positions at the University of KwaZulu-Natal- South Africa,
Makerere University- Uganda and Mary Immaculate College of University of
Limerick, Ireland. She was a Visiting Professor at Centre for the Study
of International Cooperation in Education, Hiroshima University, Japan.
She was Chairperson of the 5th Kyambogo University Council. She was
also Chairperson of the 6th Council of Muteesa I Royal University and is
a member of its Board of Directors. She is a Fellow and Vice President
of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) and chairs its
Standing Committee on Education. She holds a PhD in Education from the
University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her research interests include:
assessment for learning, policy analysis, education and international
development, teacher education, and curriculum development.
